This poem was composed while Nalan was on an expedition with the emperor. First he described the night scene of the field in the northern desert: There are tens of thousand[万] pieces[帐] of yurts[穹庐] and all were soundly asleep like they were drunk[人醉]. The poet was staring at the sky and couldn't fall into sleep. He saw numerous stars twinkling and wavering[星影摇摇] and he got an hallucination that the stars were about to fall[欲坠]. Then the poet hoped to dream of going home[归梦] notwithstanding that he knew that home is very far away on the other side[隔] of the Wolf River[狼河]. Barely he was about to fall into sleep, again[又], his dream was broken[被搅碎] by the sound of the rolling river[河声]. He begged the river: please let me return to sleep[还睡], please let me sleep on[还睡]! Because he knew[解道] that once wake up[醒来], he would have to continue the boring[无味] routine life.
