东风不解愁，偷展湘裙衩。 独夜背纱笼，影著纤腰画。 爇尽水沉烟，露滴鸳鸯瓦。 花骨冷宜香，小立樱桃下。
简介： 纳兰 This poem described a fair lady in a sleepless lonely night in the spring season. In the most populous east coast area of China the wind usually blows from the east in the spring season. Thus blowing east wind means it is in the spring season. In nature, spring is the time for most animals to mate and for people to fall in love. Thus it is especially easy for a lady to feel lonely if she doesn't have her loved one around in the spring time. The first half of this poem described this fair lady. Though the poet didn't directly say how beautiful she was, yet using hints he let the readers to imagine her beauty: The east wind[东风] didn't understand[不解] the loneliness[愁] of the fair lady, it still sneakily[偷] rolled[展] (blew) up the slit[衩] on the side of her luxurious Hunan skirt[湘裙]. In this lonely night[独夜] she stood against[背] a silk-woven lamp[纱笼], The shadow[影] of her slim figure[纤腰] composed[著] a beautiful painting[画]. The second half of this poem described the scene around which contrasts her loneliness: It was getting so late in the night, yet the fair lady was still wide awake. The fire on agilawood[水沉] had been burnt out[爇尽] and only a thread of smoke[烟] was still lingering. Outside on the roof, the paired tiles[鸳鸯瓦] on the roof were already covered by early morning dew[露滴]. (The poet used paired roof tiles to contrast her being alone.) She stood for a short while[小立] underneath[下] a cherry tree[樱桃]. The weather was cold[冷], yet the flower bud[花骨] so and the fair lady both still emitted some pleasant fragrances[宜香].------------ Gary's English translation ---------------- 《生查子》 <raw hawthorn> 东风不解愁，偷展湘裙衩。 The east wind couldn't understand the loneliness of the fair lady.
