紫玉拨寒灰，心字全非。 疏帘犹是隔年垂， 半卷夕阳红雨入， 燕子来时。 回首碧云西，多少心期。 短长亭外短长堤。 百尺游丝千里梦， 无限凄迷。
简介： The poet was writing about the dire plight of a love-lorn lady waiting for her loved one to come back. She was sitting in a dark room musing for a long time. The incense had burn out. She used a purple jade hairpin[紫玉] to turn[拨] the cold ashes[寒灰] hoping to see some remaining fire. However, in stirring the ashes, she completely ruined[全非] the heart-shaped[心字] incense. (Here "心字全非" is a double-edged expression which also means "心如死灰"-heart is like dead ashes, she has given up all hopes.) Since he left, the sparse window curtain[疏帘] had been closed and still[犹是] remained drooped[垂] and that was already over a year[隔年]. Today, she finally rolled[卷] the curtain half[半] up; and then a ray of the setting sun[夕阳] and some red[红] flower petals like rains[雨] fell into[入] the window. It is late spring time[时] and the swallows[燕子] had already come[来] back. But what about her lover? She turned her head[回首] toward the emerald clouds[碧云] on the western[西] sky, with countless[多少] hopes[心期] that he would come back soon. Standing on a tall building, she raised her head and looked afar across[外] short pavilions followed by tall pavilions[短长亭], and across short dikes followed by tall dikes[短长堤], hoping to see his form somewhere... Her thought was like a thread of gossamer drifting[游丝] hundreds of feet[百尺] afar, and she hoped her dreams[梦] could take her to her loved one thousand miles[千里] away. But when she woke up, what left with her was only endless[无限] dreary and hazy[凄迷] state.------------ Gary's English translation ---------------- 紫玉拨寒灰，心字全非。 Stirring the cold ashes with a purple jade hairpin hoping to recover some remaining heat, instead I completely ruined the heart-shaped incense and thus my hopes. 疏帘犹是隔年垂， It has been over a year since he left and the sparse window curtain still remained drooped. 半卷夕阳红雨入， I rolled the curtain half up and saw a ray of the setting sun and some red flower petals fell into the room. 燕子来时。 It is late spring and the swallows has already come back.
