简介:
In this poem Nalan wrote about the melancholic mood of a lonely lady.
First he used the thin plum tree to compare with the lady, he wrote:

If you want[欲] to ask[问] how[几分] thin[瘦] the river plum[江梅] is,
you only[只] need to see[看] the green[翠] skirt[罗裙] of the lady who is emaciated[损] because of sorrow[愁].

Then the poet continued with the story of this lady:

The lady was on bed, alone, and felt the quilt[衾] was getting cold[冷].
She went up to check the musk heater cage[麝篝] and found the fire was just out not too long ago.
She held the cage in her bosom with both hands to cherished[惜] the remaining heat[余熏] of the bonfire.

It is cold[寒] in the dusk[暮]. She missed her loved one again.
She felt stuck[可耐] couldn't do anything but to lean[倚] herself on a bamboo[竹] for a long[长] time hoping her loved one would come back.

Now the poet's logic was a little bit messed up and the time turned to the day instead of the night a sentence before:

With no loved one to share, no matter how[便教] good[好] the spring[春] was, she didn't[不] want to open the door[开门] to see the splendor of spring.

In the last sentence of this poem, the poet indicated that the lady was a geisha,
thus people strongly guess he was writing about his third love, the talented geisha, Ms. Shen. :

Under the loquat[枇杷] tree beneath the blossoming flowers[花底], there was a literate geisha[较书人] standing there waiting.
