Privacy Concerns

When you use any Gathery/Valise systems (e-mail, virtual reunion, Christian churches members services, etc.) you can always be assure of the following:

Gathery will never sell your name, e-mail, or any personal data to any mailing list or junk marketer.
Gathery will never send you un-solicited e-mail to promote any product.

There are only 3 ways that Gathery may make money from your using Gathery:

paid subscription services
non-intrusive banner advertising on Gathery or Valise-hosted web pages.
short promotional messages appended to some outgoing messages (will only apply to free, un-paid users).

Any Gathery members can also have total control on who will be able to see your personal data. The following is how it works:

In order to see any information about another person, the viewer must be a member of the same organization. Anybody must log into your organization before he can see any details about another member. This is the first line of defense. (Before logging in, Gathery also provide a "search members" function. However that function will only show member ID, first/last name, city and that is all. No phone, street, e-mail, or any other details. The primary purpose of searching before logging in is to help members finding their own "member ID".)
You can also set the "privacy preferences" to control who (in the same organization) can see which parts of your personal data. The following five pieces of information can be controlled separately:
1. your date of birth, default "nobody"
2. your phone numbers (Home,Work, cell, pager, fax), default "everybody"
3. your street address, default "everybody"
4. your family members, default "everybody"
5. your picture, default "everybody"
For each part, you can set to show:
1. viewable by all other members of the same organization
2. not viewable by anybody (except the manager of your organization)
3. viewable by selected groups of your organization
Your privacy is guaranteed by Gathery!
As we have mentioned above, that there will only be 3 ways Gathery will be able to make money from your using Gathery. Gathery will never sell your name to any mailing list collectors or send un-solicitated snail mail or e-mail to you. The following true story will explain to you how can you be assured of and even verify yourself that Gathery will always keep its promises.
A few years ago, my wife responded to a TV ad by "Time Magazine" that to subscribe Time then would receive a digital clock for free. In the following several months, we received by mail and by phone at least a dozen different other magazines, product promotions, and numerous sweepstake winning entries: "You have just won One Million Dollars!". How come we suddenly became so popular among all those junk marketers? We attributed this honor to my wife's first "Time Magazine" subscription. Time magazine accidentally inserted a letter as my middle name (which I don't have) when they first entered our data. All those junks had exactly the same bogus middle name! That is why we could be 100% sure that we should thank Time Magazine for this popularity.
The above story can give us a little inspiration on how to trace the origin of junk mail or junk e-mail and find out who is selling our names on the Internet. Go to hotmail, Valise, or Yahoo to register another free e-mail account. And use that e-mail account for no other purpose except to serve as a decoy to test a specific (Internet, web) service such as Gathery. If you receive some unrelated junks after registering with the said service, then you know that service (or the e-mail service, see below) has sold your names to others.
However, choosing a free e-mail service to do this test is also critical. You could receive junks simply because you registered a new account with the e-mail service! Of all free e-mail services, we can only guarantee you that Valise e-mail will not sell your name to anybody. (This is very easy to test also. Simply go to all the above 3 e-mail services and register a new account on each and never tell anybody those e-mail addresses. Come back to each a few weeks later. You will find probably only your Valise mail box is empty!)
The bottom line is: Gathery will guarantee to protect your privacy!
